Neurotoxin Therapy
Botulinum toxin therapy is a specialist treatment that can be used for a range of neurological conditions involving excessive or involuntary muscle activity. By targeting selected muscles, Botulinum toxin can help reduce over-contraction, muscle tightness and associated symptoms, depending on the condition being treated.
At Synapse Neurology, Neurotoxin Therapy in Melbourne may be considered for neurological conditions including:
- Cervical dystonia / spasmodic torticollis
- Hemifacial spasm
- Blepharospasm
- Spasticity following stroke
- Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)
- Chronic migraine prevention
Before treatment, patients are assessed by Dr Debo Gorai to determine whether Botulinum toxin therapy is appropriate for their condition. A referral from your doctor is required for assessment and consideration of treatment.

Botulinum toxin may also be used as a preventive treatment for chronic migraine. It is generally considered for people who experience frequent migraine or headache days and is given at regular treatment intervals.
Patients are usually reviewed by the neurologist before treatment to assess their migraine history, symptoms and suitability for Botulinum toxin therapy. Keeping a headache diary can be helpful, as it allows the number of headache days and response to treatment to be monitored over time.
Treatment is commonly repeated approximately every 12 weeks, and more than one treatment session may be required before the full benefit can be assessed.
If you are attending for chronic migraine treatment, please avoid wearing foundation or facial makeup on the day of your appointment. Patients with long hair should also bring a hair tie.
