Nerve Conduction Studies & EMG Studies

Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) and Electromyography (EMG) are specialised neurological tests used to assess how well the nerves and muscles are functioning. These investigations can help identify the presence, location and extent of conditions affecting peripheral nerves, muscles and the connection between nerves and muscles.

An EMG test measures the electrical activity of muscles and can help detect abnormalities caused by muscle disease, nerve damage or problems affecting the communication between nerves and muscles. A Nerve Conduction Study measures the speed and strength of electrical signals travelling through a nerve and can help determine whether a nerve has been damaged or compressed.

NCS and EMG testing are often performed together because they provide complementary information about nerve and muscle function. They are commonly recommended for patients experiencing symptoms such as numbness, tingling, burning sensations, muscle weakness or other changes affecting the arms or legs. A detailed medical history and physical examination are also important in determining which nerves and muscles should be investigated.

Nerve Conduction Studies and EMG may assist in diagnosing conditions including:

  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Cubital Tunnel Syndrome
  • Peripheral Neuropathy
  • Peroneal Neuropathy
  • Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Ulnar Neuropathy
