Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a progressive neurological condition and one of the most commonly recognised movement disorders. It can affect people at different stages of life, although it is more commonly diagnosed in older adults. Parkinson’s can also develop in younger people, which is often referred to as Young Onset Parkinson’s Disease.

Diagnosing Parkinson’s disease can be complex because there is no single laboratory test that confirms the condition. Assessment by a specialist neurologist is therefore important. Diagnosis generally involves a detailed review of symptoms and medical history together with a neurological examination to identify characteristic changes in movement, muscle tone, coordination and balance.

Common Symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease

The four primary movement symptoms associated with Parkinson’s disease are:

  • Tremor – shaking or trembling that may affect the hands, arms, legs, jaw or face
  • Rigidity – stiffness of the limbs or trunk
  • Bradykinesia – slowing of voluntary movement
  • Postural instability – difficulties with balance, posture and coordination

Symptoms usually develop gradually and can progress over time. However, Parkinson’s affects every person differently, and the type, severity and progression of symptoms can vary considerably between individuals.

Parkinson’s Disease Treatment and Management

While there is currently no cure for Parkinson’s disease, treatment can help manage symptoms and support mobility, independence and quality of life. Management is tailored to the individual and may change over time as symptoms or circumstances change.

Regular neurological review allows treatment effectiveness, movement symptoms and other changes associated with Parkinson’s disease to be monitored and managed appropriately.

If you or someone you know has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, or is experiencing symptoms such as tremor, stiffness, slowed movement or balance difficulties, Synapse Neurology provides specialist neurological assessment and ongoing management.
